I know there is a command line option with inkscape. I tried to type inkscape on Terminal and there is no such command. I'm confused... Does this mean that I need to install the linux version of inkscape in order to use the command line?
In the Inkspace download page, the instruction is very clear. You can download the X11 app from the link given in that page.After installation you can have the Preference window as shown in that page.

I just downloaded and looked at this Inkscape v1.0.0.b1 release and it appears to be a drag and drop straight into the /Applications folder. No longer needs X11, as it is a native Mac application (.app). Finding the actual .dmg installer is harder than was suggested previously. That was a PITA, and you may struggle with it.
On the latest "PASSED" pipeline row, in the far right position, there is a button called ARTIFACTS (like a download icon / button), click there and select "Download inkscape:mac artifacts". And you will get a ZIP file with a DMG, open it, drag to your Applications folder, done. =)
In addition to the tools, you will be pleased with the ability of this vector design software to create or download ready-made plug-ins. The tools include spiral, paint bucket, brush, pencil and airbrush.
For macOS 10.11 and newer, Inkscape 1.0 should download and install correctly. However, if you have macOS 10.7 through 10.10, you will need both XQuarts and version 0.92.2 in order for it to install correctly. I just downloaded and copied the files to Inkscape 1.0 but when I close/reopen Inkscape, the Bezier Envelope is in my Extensins, but grayed out (just teasing me!!). Any tipes on how to get this going for me please?

We will use Inkscape for a couple of reasons. Firstly, it is free software. Secondly, it uses SVG natively. Many Linux distributions come with inkscape already installed; if not, you can use your package manager to install it.
